First museum built to commemorate 6 June 1944 and the Battle of Normandy

The Musée du Débarquement in Arromanches was the first museum created on this theme in the aftermath of the Second World War. From 1945 onwards, the municipal councils of the Landing towns met regularly to coordinate reconstruction.

Why a Normandy landing?

Allied strategists drew up an ambitious plan, code-named Overlord, which was accepted at the Quadrant Conference in August 1943 by Winston CHURCHILL and Franklin ROOSEVELT in Quebec. The plan was to land in Normandy with 30 divisions.

The success of Operation Overlord depended on the ability of the Allied armies to get men, supplies and equipment to Normandy quickly. The rapid capture of a deep-water port, such as Le Havre or Cherbourg, capable of accommodating large vessels, was vital to ensure the survival of the future bridgeheads…
