Camp Churchill : a true success!
A successful event for the Churchill re-enactment camp in Arromanches
From 5 to 7 June, Arromanches came alive with living history during the Churchill re-enactment camp. For three days, the town was once again filled with the unique atmosphere of major commemorations, marked by the passing on of history, encounters and shared emotion.
Set up in the heart of Arromanches, this re-enactment camp allowed visitors to immerse themselves in the history of the D-Day landings and the Second World War, getting up close to those who bring it to life with such passion. Uniforms, vehicles, everyday objects, and conversations with the re-enactors: every detail invited young and old alike to gain a better understanding of this decisive period in our history.
Over 3,000 visitors came to explore the camp, meet the participating associations and share a moving moment centred on remembrance. Throughout the weekend, the smiles, the public’s curiosity and the many enthusiastic responses bore witness to the deep attachment felt for these events dedicated to passing on history.
Co-organised by the D-Day Museum and the Normandy Soldiers Memory association, with the invaluable support of the Town of Arromanches-les-Bains, the event brought together six re-enactment groups. All contributed, through their commitment, their historical rigour and their willingness to help, to making this year’s event a resounding success.
Beyond the re-enactment, Camp Churchill served as a meeting place for people of all ages. Visitors were able to ask questions, chat with enthusiasts, and discover exhibits, artefacts and stories that bring history to life. These moments of dialogue lie at the heart of the D-Day Museum’s mission: to pass on history, making it accessible and vivid, so that we never forget.
The D-Day Museum would like to extend its heartfelt thanks to all the organisations involved, the volunteers, the partners, the Town of Arromanches-les-Bains, and everyone who contributed to the success of these three days. We would also like to thank the visitors, who turned out in such large numbers, for their presence, their enthusiasm and their wonderful feedback.
This wonderful event will remain a highlight of June in Arromanches. It serves as a reminder of how history is also passed on through experience, interaction and emotion.
We look forward to seeing you next year for a new edition of Camp Churchill. Whether you are a history enthusiast, simply curious, visiting with your family or just passing through Arromanches, we look forward to welcoming you so that together we can continue to keep the memory of the D-Day landings alive.
